Teaching Assistants Teaching Assistant Job Description & Qualifications Job Description: Vanderbilt Summer Academy is a summer residential program for academically gifted students. Students typically score in the 95th percentile or higher on a nationally normed achievement test. They will spend between 1-3 weeks on campus, taking college-level classes taught by Vanderbilt professors and PhD students. The Teaching Assistant works with the instructor and VSA staff to ensure that students are appropriately challenged and supported during their time with the program. In general the TA has four domains of responsibility.

• Program Support — Supervise students, provide accountability to students and instructors for program schedules and policies, assist VSA staff on check-in and check-out days, master program and university policies about the protection of minors, and provide additional support as determined by administrative staff. • Logistical Support — Procure copies and materials for the instructor, set up for labs and other classroom activities, drive a minivan for any class field-trips, and other duties necessary to the smooth operations of the classroom.

• Pedagogical Support — Assist with differentiated instruction, work with the instructor to develop short teaching/breakout models as appropriate, supervise study halls and labs as applicable. • Student Support — Liaise with appropriate staff about students’ socio-emotional and academic concerns. Important Dates for VSA 2018: • June 3-9: Training week • June 10-15: (grade 8) • June 17-June 29: (grade 9-10) • June 30- July 7: Intersession (week off) • July 8-27: Session 3 (grades 11-12) Standard TA Hours: • Monday-Friday, 8:00AM–4:00PM • Saturdays (Sessions 2 & 3), 9:30AM–3:00PM Additional Days/Hours • Teaching Assistants will also coordinate meetings with instructors prior to the program to help prepare for the class.
